The Yaa Asantewaa Story
One of the imperial states in the West Coast of Africa, which peaked in the1800s, was the Asante
Kingdom. It emerged in the early 1700s. The British had settled on the coast of modern day Ghana a
century earlier, and had established diplomatic relations with the Kingdom through the 1817 Treaty of
Friendship (The Anglo-Asante Treaty).
However, the Asante resistance to British expansionist policies,
subsequently, led to the waging of five wars. The British were routed in the first (in 1824) and
subsequent wars until the last in 1900-1901.
